Thompson is a 15+ person digital branding agency based in North Leeds, currently working remotely. We work across a range of sectors including health, wellbeing, charity/not for profit and property.
We’ve been around for a long time, so we have great clients and a great reputation, but the management team is young(ish) and determined to do things differently. We support remote and flexible working, promote local businesses, champion women in the boardroom and LGBTQIA+ rights. We don’t believe in asking anyone to work for free, even at the start of their careers, so only offer paid living wage internships. Our event series, Openhouse, helps us find inspiration in the most remote corners, and helps us cook up new ideas.
The creative industries can be busy and sometimes pressured and it’s true, we work hard, but we work just as hard at creating a fair, open culture, and welcome feedback from everyone to get us there. We talk about our wellbeing and encourage others to do the same. We take a non-hierarchical approach to project assignments; it’s about the best mix of skills, as well as helping people to pursue their own interests and aspirations.
Thompson believes in promoting inclusion and diversity and in helping combat systemic racism, sexism and other forms of oppression. We use our voice and business to actively make a change in the wider world, not just in the creative world. That’s in who we choose to work with, in the way we speak to the world, our creative work, and the way we hire. We’re not perfect but we want to get better.
We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive workforce. If you are excited about this role, but don’t meet every qualification listed, we still really encourage you to apply. Email firstname.lastname@example.org

About this role:
We are looking for a front-end developer with an appreciation of good design to join our team. The role would be ideal for someone with 3+ years’ experience in an agency or freelance role who’s wanting to work somewhere that builds beautiful products on a modern stack, that are as UX-smart as they are performant.
You will be working alongside an award-winning design team, building brilliant, accessible, responsive websites from flat designs that capitalise on the power of the Web to create visually stimulating and engaging experiences for users. You will develop new components and improve the functionality of existing sites, debug reported issues across both new and existing sites, and make sure of user-friendly CMS integration.
As we’re a branding agency, we want you to have an interest in products that are well designed, have good attention to both UI and technical details and provide a brilliant user experience.
If you are good at asking for help and listening to feedback then you’ll get on well with us. You’ll work closely with our Head of Development, Designers, Account Managers and UX designers. You’ll review and critique other people’s work, feed in ideas to and collaborate to improve designs, and build, and input into technical documentation.
Technologies that you’ll need in your day-to-day job:
Tools that we often use at Thompson:
- IDE: PHPStorm or Visual Studio Code
- Package management: NPM and Composer
- Version control: git
- CSS tooling: SCSS and PostCSS
- JS bundling: Webpack
- Task running: Gulp
- CMS: WordPress
Not sure you’re ok with all of these tools and technologies right now? Don’t worry. There will be plenty of opportunity for learning on the job, so we’re looking for someone with the drive and interest in technology to develop and improve their skills along the way.
How we work
We work quickly and often manage multiple projects at once, rather than working on the same project for weeks or months at a time. You will need to get used to switching between projects fairly quickly. We don’t do a lot of heavy back-end work or large transactional websites.

- Please send your CV, portfolio or link to your site, and anything else that we might find useful.
